At Red Moon Wellness, plant medicine is one of our specialties. Being a clinical herbalist and massage therapist with over 18 years experience, when I founded Red Moon it was important to me that our therapists were well-trained to offer thoughtful, effective use of topical CBD as part of our massage therapy services and not just a fad “add-on” option to a massage.
All of our licensed massage therapists who offer CBD oil massage have been trained in the physiology, biochemistry, and therapeutic applications of topical CBD. And while CBD products are now widely available, it remains surprisingly rare to find high-quality products—or practitioners who understand how to use them for clinical benefit.
What Is a CBD Oil Massage?
CBD oil massage is a therapeutic massage that incorporates extracts from the hemp (Cannabis) plant, applied topically to the skin. It can support relief from musculoskeletal and nerve pain and various types of chronic pain and inflammation. While massage therapists do not directly treat skin conditions, topical CBD does have the added side benefit of being beneficial for a number of inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema.
At Red Moon, your session is fully customized. We use whole-plant, organic cannabis (hemp) oil extracted from the whole plant and apply it directly to your areas of concern. To enhance the effect of our CBD oil, we combine it with warm heat packs and our own house-made anti-inflammatory herbal liniment, designed to support better absorption into the skin. The experience is deeply relaxing and completely non-psychoactive. (Please note: CBD massage is not recommended during pregnancy as not enough research has been done to ensure its safety in pregnancy.)
Why We Use Whole-Plant CBD Extracts
We source our CBD oil from Sisters of the Valley, a small, women-owned company in California. Their oils are made using traditional herbal extraction techniques—an approach that’s rare in the CBD industry. Instead of using complex industrial processes to isolate the CBD molecule, Sisters of the Valley infuses the whole plant into oil using gentle heat. This draws out all of the fat-soluble compounds in the plant, preserving the full spectrum of natural constituents in the natural ratios present in the plant.
While the cannabis industry often simplifies messaging to focus on just CBD and THC, herbalists know that plants contain a wide array of constituents—terpenes, flavonoids, and more—that work synergistically to create therapeutic effects in the body. Isolated compounds can be less effective—and sometimes less safe—than whole-plant extracts.
One easy way to tell if your CBD product is a true whole-plant extract? Smell it. Whole-plant CBD retains the distinctive, earthy aroma of Cannabis thanks to terpenes—compounds responsible for a plant’s scent that also play a crucial therapeutic role. In fact, terpenes are what make essential oils smell the way they do, and they often enhance the effects of cannabinoids like CBD. This synergistic relationship is at the core of how plant medicine works.
Clinical Benefits of Topical CBD
CBD oil massage can be helpful for a wide range of conditions, including:
- Chronic pain and inflammation
- Joint and nerve pain
- Fibromyalgia
- Peripheral neuralgia
- Arthritis
Topical application allows the cannabinoids to interact directly with the body’s endocannabinoid receptors found in the skin and underlying tissues. This results in localized relief without the compound entering the bloodstream. The primary effects of stimulating the endocannabinoid system include reducing inflammation, calming nerve activity, relaxing muscle spasms (both smooth and skeletal muscle), and creating an overall sense of safety and wellbeing.
Many of our clients report not only reduced pain or irritation but also a deep sense of calm and relaxation after treatment!
CBD oil massage at Red Moon Wellness reflects our core philosophy: thoughtful care, clinical expertise, whole-plant medicine, and whole-person healing. We invite you to experience the difference that comes from working with trained practitioners and naturally therapeutic herbal products.
