Lena holds a Master of Science in Clinical Herbal Medicine and is also a licensed massage therapist, certified birth doula, certified lactation counselor, and certified childbirth educator with over 18 years of experience as both a practitioner and educator. She founded Red Moon in 2008 as a synthesis of her advanced massage and bodywork skills, her expertise in all things pregnancy and birth, her passion for studying human physiology and cutting edge science alongside traditional healing systems rooted in the rhythms of nature, and her love of clinical mentorship and team leadership.
Lena has had the honor of supporting more than a thousand New York families in their transition into parenthood with childbirth education, perinatal bodywork, and a decade of attending births as a doula in homes, hospitals, and birthing centers. This experience has given her unique insight into the connection between structural alignment in the pregnant body and optimal fetal positioning for labor and birth.
Lena’s integrative whole-person approach to treating inflammatory musculoskeletal conditions with herbal medicine and bodywork, is illustrated in her published case report in the Journal of the American Herbalists Guild (Spring 2018 edition), The Link between Gut and Autoimmunity: Treatment of Polymyalgia Rheumatica and Colitis with a “Weeding and Feeding” Approach. She has also presented clinical case reports at conferences, given lectures and workshops, and taught continuing education courses for health and wellness professionals in diverse settings on topics ranging from circadian rhythm disruption in night-shift workers, uterine contractility patterns in reproductive disorders, to herbal medicine for menopausal concerns, and massage therapy for breast/chest health. Lena has been recognized as an expert in her field in a diversity of contexts ranging from media features including The Wall Street Journal and Pacifica Radio to providing expert witness testimony and consulting for the NYC District Attorney’s office.
She is deeply passionate about helping individuals and families take charge of their health while reducing their reliance on costly, invasive, and often unnecessary medical interventions – incorporating practices that are rooted in traditional wisdom and supported by modern science.
Before opening Red Moon Wellness in 2008, Lena worked as a coordinator of a community education program on gender-based violence and served on a domestic violence response team in New Brunswick, NJ. She currently lives in Park Slope with her husband, a sociologist at Hunter College and the CUNY Graduate Center, and their two daughters, Juniper and Calliandra.
